Coring Equipment

Mooring Systems now offers a complete line of gravity, piston and boomerang coring devices for collecting core samples in reservoirs, lakes, harbors and oceans.

In March of 2002 Mooring Systems purchased from Benthos, Inc. the sole rights to its line of bottom coring products.  Mooring Systems continues to supply the Benthos designs and all associated spare parts, including; core liners, core catchers and core liner end-caps.

Custom Coring Products

Mooring Systems also offers customized solutions for your coring needs.  Our full in-house welding and machining capabilities allows us to perform design modifications quickly.

Standard Coring Devices

Gravity Corer - Model 2171

The Gravity Corer is a general purpose tool for obtaining sediment cores in reservoirs, harbors, lakes or oceans. Cores are 67mm (2 5/8 inches) in diameter and as long as 1.5 meters (5 feet) depending on sediment strength. The 2171 corer is constructed of galvanized steel with stabilizing fins to assist straight bottom penetration. Four 20 kg (44 pound) lead weights are provided standard, with space for two additional weights for penetration of hard bottom sediments.

A watertight valve at the top of the core liner prevents washout of the sample while the corer is being raised to the surface. A stainless steel core catcher at the bottom of the liner has flexible fingers that allow the core to pass through but not slide back out. The galvanized steel barrel completely encloses the core liner to protect it from damage. A removable manganese bronze nose cone provides the cutting edge.

Features

  • Core samples to 1.5 meters long
  • Positive 0-ring sealed valve prevents core washout
  • Adjustable weight stand
  • Stainless steel core catcher
  • Easily disassembled for shipping and handling

Utility Piston Corer - Model 2172

The Model 2172 Utility Piston Corer obtains virtually undisturbed core samples up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) long. The 2172 is also constructed from galvanized steel and uses up to six 20kg (44pound) weights for maximum penetration (four weights are supplied standard). A release mechanism allows the corer to free-fall when the pilot weight contacts the ocean floor. The barrel of the corer penetrates the sediment while the special piston remains just above the sample. The piston helps draw the sample into the core liner and a stainless steel core catcher retains it.

Features

  • Obtains 1.5 meter cores in harder bottom conditions than Gravity Corer
  • Trigger release allows free-fall for maximum penetration
  • Piston reduces disturbance to sample
  • Core may be stored in plastic liner - no extrusion required

Medium Weight Piston Corer - Model 2175

The Model 2175 Medium Weight Piston Corer will take up to a 3 meter (10 foot) long core. Up to sixteen 25kg (55 pound) lead weights may be added (8 are supplied standard) for maximum penetration. Core lengths of 4.5 meters (15 feet) and 6 meters (20 feet) can be obtained when using extension barrels and couplings. A sealed piston helps to reduce core compaction, and a stainless steel core catcher retains the sample. A trigger release mechanism trips just before reaching the bottom, allowing the corer to free fall to gain momentum and increase penetration.

Features

  • Obtains core samples from 3 to 6 meters long
  • Trigger release allows free-fall for maximum penetration
  • Piston reduces disturbance and assures longer cores
  • Cores easily removed and stored in clear plastic liners
  • Modular design - weights and barrel lengths can easily be changed to meet varying conditions

Large Piston Corer - Model 2450

The Large Piston Corer is used to take essentially undisturbed sediment cores up to 15.2 meters (50 feet) long. Originally designed to be used in the deep ocean, the corer has been used successfully for harbor, river and bay studies.

The corer is wire lowered and has a heavy weight stand to drive the barrel into the sediment. A release device triggers the corer just before reaching bottom, allowing it to free-fall to gain momentum and increase penetration. A special piston helps to draw the core in and reduces compaction of the sample. A stainless steel core catcher prevents the sample from falling back out. Located on the release mechanism is a safety arming device which locks the trip arm until a preset depth where the elasticity of the wire absorbs the shock of a rolling ship, eliminating premature tripping.

Features

  • A heavy-duty corer obtaining samples to 15.2 meters long
  • Five-section core barrel with quick-disconnect threaded joints
  • High-strength, galvanized alloy steel barrels
  • Safety arming device prevents premature tripping
  • Streamlined weight stand
  • Removable clear plastic core liners
  • Special piston design reduces core distortion during sampling

Standard Replacement Parts

  • Core Liners: Transparent plastic liners in 10, 8 and 4 feet lengths standard.  Custom lengths, diameters and wall thickness are also available.
  • End Caps: Sizes available for all Benthos liners and many custom sizes.
  • Nose Cones: Available in stainless steel or manganese bronze.
  • Core Catcher: Our welded stainless steel leaf-spring design provides a durable configuration for preventing slide out of the sample.
